Every so often, a game comes along that really gets some mainstream publicity, and this public attention can have an impact on our ordinary, non-game related lives. Most commonly, it comes in the form of a game such as Mortal Kombat or Grand Theft Auto III, fueling the debate on violence in the media. But Bad Dudes affected our lives in a much different way. Its plotline (that the president had been kidnapped by ninjas) terrified Americans everywhere, but also made them more aware of the threat posed by ninjas to our democratic society.
To me, the first Metal Gear Solid, while a bit too short, was a near flawless blend of great story and gameplay. That same solid gameplay was present for Metal Gear Solid 2, but was spoiled by a horrendous story, terrible pacing, and a character I wanted to punch in the face. Well, in Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater (PS2), Snake is back and the story is better, but the pacing is even worse, and now the gameplay is busted, too. Thanks, Konami!
Good news everybody: GT4 does NOT suck. Admittedly, I’ve only gotten to spend a few hours with it so far, and obviously I’m not quite ready to review this huge title. Even so, I think I can safely say that, at the very least, the game is good. Just how good, I’m not quite ready to say, but it’s definitely better than horrible. The graphics are gorgeous, the fantastic gameplay from the first is intact, and it looks as if the way you progress through the game is a little bit better. Plus, it let me transfer over 2 licenses and $100,000 from my old GT3 data. Nice.
Hey gang, I just wanted to drop in quickly to announce that I will be writing a feature which should provide some in-depth coverage of the upcoming Gran Turismo 4 (assuming it’s ever actually released). It’s basically going to be reviews of some of the various cars in the game, because there’s nothing worse than playing for hours to earn the money to buy that sweet ride, and then finding out that it handles like it has square wheels. Unlike similar guides you may find online, which are generally written by experts, I am merely good at the GT games, which means you won’t have to worry about me recommending cars that can only be driven competently by professionals. I will try to update weekly with 5-10 cars every week. If you’re interested in what looks to be the hottest racing game of the year, you won’t want to miss this!*
A while back I told the story of my not having an NES until 1991. I’m sure some of you wondered how a hardcore gamer such as myself could have survived such a long time without one. It wasn’t easy, I can tell you that much. But today I’m going to share with you my harrowing tale of survival, as I managed to struggle through the golden age of gaming without the world’s game machine of choice.
